London Plane – “Bright Black”

“Bright Black“ é o segundo álbum da banda nova-iorquina London Plane, acabado de lançar em Junho de 2022 (o primeiro é “New York Howl”, de 2018).
Segundo o press release, este é um disco para amantes de Bauhaus, David Bowie, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, XTC, Shriekback, Gary Numan, Wire, Soft Kill, Interpol, Preoccupations, Protomartyr, The Primitives, The KVB, Iggy Pop, The Cramps.
Ora, é exactamente nesta misturada de influências que reside o busílis para mim. Para dizê-lo curto e grosso, há músicas de que gosto muito e músicas de que não gosto mesmo nada. Não posso, por isso, considerar “Bright Black“ um álbum equilibrado que vá agradar a um público em específico do princípio ao fim, da mesma maneira que não conseguiu agradar-me a mim.
Mas nesta misturada há gemas espantosas a descobrir, nomeadamente (seria mesmo preciso dizê-lo?) as que recordam um som mais ao estilo de Bauhaus ou post punk, embora de maneira nenhuma cópias: “Bright Black”, “The Darker You”, “Watch That Madman Go” e “Francesco”.
As outras, nem por isso.

“Bright Black“ is the New York band London Plane’s second album, just released in June 2022  (the first was “New York Howl”, from 2018).
According to the press release, this is a record for lovers of Bauhaus, David Bowie, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, XTC, Shriekback, Gary Numan, Wire, Soft Kill, Interpol, Preoccupations, Protomartyr, The Primitives, The KVB, Iggy Pop, The Cramps.
Well, it’s exactly in this amalgamated salad of influences that the problem resides for me. To put it short and simple, some tracks I like a lot and some tracks I don’t like at all. Therefore, I cannot consider “Bright Black“ as a balanced album that manages to please a specific audience from start to finish, the same way it couldn’t please me.
But in the midst of this amalgamated salad there are amazing gems to be discovered, namely (do I really need to say it?) those that recall a more Bauhaus-like post punk type of sound, though not, in any way, copies: “Bright Black”, “The Darker You”, “Watch That Madman Go” and “Francesco”.
The others, not really.
